 CALNE
Calne is a small Wiltshire Town which is rapdily growing
partly due to the Porte Marsh Industrial estate which has attracted 100
businesses to set up . Previously the largest employer was Harris Bacon
Co which was the larest UK supplier of Bacon (now closed and demolished).
Calne stands on the River Marden and Wilts and Berks Canal . Calne is
in the process of retail revival - with Phelps parade being developed
, and there have been some big improvements for shoppers - with the large
Sainsburys added in the last few years and the local library stocks a
huge number of books and good facilities in a recently purpose building
of modern architecture .
On the edge of town is the Cherhil White Horse , and much of the countrside around the A4 is designated natural beauty status. 2
schools are well up in the league tables - John Bentley Comprehensive and St Mary's School is a leading private scool for girls . Nearby is
Bowood House , a stately home open to the public , with kids adventure playground and tours of the building .
Calne is twinned with Charlieu and Eningen .
